Bringing Awareness to the International Day for Disaster Reduction in Bangladesh

October 13 has been declared the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) by the United Nations. Bangladesh is a country prone to natural disaster and observes the day at both the national and District/Upazila levels.

The Pathways program participated in events held at educational institutions within the program’s Upazilas and an event at the national level celebrated with the Department of Disaster Management (DDM). The days’ events included a rally for awareness, art competition, and discussion session. At the national level CARE took part in poster printing, rally and a discussion session held in Dhaka.

Rally for awareness in Rangpur was led by the heads of educational institutes, NGOs, and government officials.

The discussion session took place with a speech from CARE representative, Mr. Jahangir Alam, PM, on enhancing Inclusive Disaster resilience in Bangladesh project. Mr. Alam discussed the Pathways and DIPECHO projects and what they are doing for the community’s vulnerability as well as the objective and rationale of observing the IDDR.

Within the events that took place at both the national and local levels, all community members were engaged. Farmers, students, teachers and other participants discussed and understood important concepts pertaining to disaster preparedness, mitigation and response.
