Jemimah Njuki – TEDx presentation “The Missing Link”

Jemimah Njuki, CARE’s Pathways team leader, spoke at a TEDx event in Washington D.C. on the issues of women’s empowerment and the importance of the inclusion of men and communities in that process. Her presentation focused on how development programs have evolved from gender-blind approaches toward programming that is more centered around women as change agents, but in doing this, program design has failed to recognize the contexts within which these women live and their interactions with those who hold power in their communities. She emphasizes that without addressing these outside forces, the economic and social empowerment of women cannot be achieved.

Jemimah has a PhD in Development studies from the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania and has been working on gender issues in Africa for the last 10 years.
